The Best Hotels in Tokyo for Solo Travelers in 2024

Visiting cities alone means spending hours reading hotel reviews, checking out transportation to city centers and ensuring that the places you eat and sleep at are up to mark. Tokyo doesn’t really have a full-blown hostel culture but it does have some great economical hotels. Because the different districts of Tokyo cater to varied commercial activities, it’s best to always read up about the area you choose to stay in. Opt for places near major transportation hubs such as Shibuya, Kinshicho, Tamachi, Yamanote Line, and Tokyo Station which offer multiple train lines throughout the city.

Your choice of neighborhood depends largely on the type of trip you’re trying to have in Tokyo. Ginza is a little high society and more expensive than, say, Shinjuku, which is best for enjoying great affordable food and other busy city experiences. But Ginza also has some great coffee houses and a quiet ambiance if you’re into that. Shinjuku can be a little all over the place and intimidating if you’re traveling alone. But, again, a seasoned solo traveler wouldn’t have a problem with that. Also, in this article, we are saying NO to those expensive capsule hotels! I mean, the last thing I want to do is pay 30000 yen to touch my nose to the air-conditioned ceiling.

Now that we have covered the bases, let’s get to it. Here are some ideal accommodation options for solo travelers in Tokyo.

1. Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu

If you’re traveling to Tokyo for the first time and want to book a place in a good locality, Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu is a fantastic option. I mean, sometimes, all a solo traveler needs is their own space and a really good bed to heal the jet lag. The rates begin from 20,000 yen and Priceline offers great deals. It is close to Shibuya crossing and the Hachiko statue. They have several types of floors including a ladies floor to connect with other travelers.

2. The Knot Tokyo Shinjuku

Travelers usually do not prefer Shinjuku to live in because, well, it is a pretty commercial area. It is usually a place you visit to experience Tokyo’s nightlife. However, there is one particular hotel that is quite recommended for solo travelers. The Knot Tokyo Shinjuku is a boutique hotel situated in a good location as it faces Shinjuku Central Park and has ample stores that make your stay super convenient. I won’t hash out too many details since you can find them on their website. They also have a pretty spot-on understanding of the Tokyo’s most lively ward. They have integrated it into the concept of the hotel:

‘Shinjuku’s colorful personalities neither exclude nor interfere with each other, but one way or another they connect. The broad-mindedness that enables tolerance of such loose connections is probably Shinjuku’s greatest attraction’.

As a fellow solo traveler, this seems like just the place to be!

3. The Share Hotels Lyuro Tokyo Kiyosumi (Dormitory)

For only 7252.55 yen per night, the shared dormitory of the Kiyosumi offers comfortable stay, hygienic rooms, and a view of the beautiful River Sumida. This is a well-reviewed place and can fit a budget travel plan easily. If you are like me and return to your room only to crash and get a good night’s sleep, then this is it! They also have an option to include breakfast at an affordable rate.

4. Hotel Niwa

Located in Misakicho, Chiyoda City, Tokyo is a well-recommended 3-star hotel by female solo travelers. Depending on the month you are visiting, the rates begin from 19000 yen per night. Check-in begins at 03:00 pm. Enjoy modern amenities during your stay at Hotel Niwa, including a flat screen LCD TV, complimentary Wi-Fi. Additionally, each room includes an electric kettle, a mini-fridge, a humidifying air purifier, and a selection of flavored teas.

5. Moxy by Marriott Tokyo Kinshicho

This hotel is at walking distance from Kinshicho station, which provides access to most tourist locations in Tokyo. Moxy Tokyo Kinshicho by the Marriott group is nestled in downtown Tokyo. It is a boutique hotel that blends Japanese hospitality with modern amenities and contemporary decor. Their website states that each room has chic, minimalist designs, high-speed Wi-Fi, walk-in showers, and 50-inch TVs. They have Grab & Go options and a Moxy Bar & Lounge. With a gym, library, and prime location near Tokyo’s attractions this is also a good choice if your budget is around 20000 yen.

A Mizu City Travel Tip: Don’t be tricked by the quirky overpriced hotels offering a “unique” experience. Many hotels tend to bait travelers by positioning as trendy “book and bed” places and offering really bad service at a high price. Also no matter the district, some streets tend to be seedy, so it is always better to look them up before you book your hotel. Sometimes a great hotel could be located in a not-so-great neighborhood.

Lastly, Tokyo’s hotel industry is extremely traveler-friendly. The Japanese are hospitable people who go beyond to ensure a wonderful stay. Don’t overthink too much, plan well, and I’m certain you have a memorable time in the city!
